Preparing Your Roanoke Home’s Exterior for Winter: A Contractor’s Checklist

Fall in the Roanoke Valley means beautiful leaves, cooler evenings — and a short window to get your home ready before winter arrives. Cold temperatures, freeze-thaw cycles, and the occasional heavy snow or ice storm can turn small exterior problems into expensive repairs.

The good news? A little preparation now goes a long way. Here’s a contractor’s checklist to help Roanoke homeowners protect their home’s exterior before the first hard freeze.

1. Clean and Inspect Your Gutters

This is the most important item on the list. By late fall, gutters are often packed with leaves, twigs, and pine needles. When clogged gutters freeze, water backs up under your shingles and can create ice dams — one of the most damaging winter problems a roof can face.

Before winter:

  • Clean out all leaves and debris once the trees are bare
  • Flush downspouts with a garden hose to confirm water flows freely
  • Check that gutters are firmly attached and not sagging
  • Make sure downspouts direct water at least 3–4 feet away from your foundation

If your gutters are sagging, leaking, or pulling away from the house, fall is the ideal time to repair or replace them — before snow and ice add extra weight.

2. Inspect Your Roof

Winter weather puts a lot of stress on your roof. Snow load, ice, and high winds can quickly exploit any weak spots. From the ground (or with binoculars), look for:

  • Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  • Damaged or loose flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
  • Granules collecting in your gutters — a sign of aging shingles
  • Sagging areas on the roofline
  • Water stains on interior ceilings, especially in upstairs rooms

Safety note: We don’t recommend climbing onto your roof yourself. If you spot anything concerning, a professional inspection is the safer choice — and it’s free from Empire Siding and Windows.

3. Seal Drafty Windows and Doors

Drafty windows and doors are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in Virginia homes. Before the heating bills start climbing:

  • Check for drafts by holding a lit candle or incense stick near window and door frames on a windy day — if the smoke wavers, you have a leak
  • Replace worn weatherstripping around doors and operable windows
  • Re-caulk gaps around exterior window and door trim
  • Install or adjust door sweeps on exterior doors

If you notice condensation between window panes, windows that won’t close tightly, or rotted frames, sealing won’t fix the problem. Those are signs it may be time for replacement. (See our guide: The 7 Warning Signs You Need New Windows.)

4. Check Your Siding for Cracks and Gaps

Cracked, loose, or missing siding panels let moisture behind your walls. In winter, that moisture can freeze and expand, making the damage worse with every freeze-thaw cycle. Walk around your home and look for:

  • Cracked or broken panels
  • Loose or missing pieces, especially after fall storms
  • Gaps around windows, doors, and where siding meets trim
  • Soft or rotted trim boards

Small repairs now can prevent water damage, mold, and much larger repairs come spring.

5. Trim Trees Near Your Home

Overhanging branches become a real hazard in winter. Heavy snow and ice can snap limbs and send them onto your roof, gutters, or siding. Trim back any branches that hang over your roofline or come within a few feet of your home.

6. Protect Outdoor Plumbing

While it’s not strictly an exterior renovation item, frozen pipes can cause serious damage to your home’s exterior walls and foundation:

  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses
  • Shut off and drain exterior spigots if you have interior shut-off valves
  • Consider insulated covers for outdoor faucets

7. Check Your Attic Ventilation and Insulation

Poor attic ventilation and insulation contribute directly to ice dams. When warm air escapes into the attic, it heats the roof deck, melts snow, and the water refreezes at the colder roof edge. Make sure:

  • Soffit and ridge vents are clear and unblocked
  • Attic insulation is evenly distributed and adequate for Virginia’s climate
  • There are no obvious air leaks from the living space into the attic

When to Call a Professional

Many of these tasks are easy DIY projects. But you should call a professional if you find:

  • Missing or damaged shingles or flashing
  • Gutters that are sagging, leaking, or pulling away from the house
  • Rotted window frames, sills, or trim
  • Cracked or missing siding panels
  • Water stains on ceilings or walls

Fall is the best time to address these issues. Once winter weather arrives, some exterior work becomes harder to schedule — and damage that’s left alone over the winter usually gets worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install windows or siding in the winter?

Yes — window and siding installation can be done in most winter weather in the Roanoke area. Windows are typically replaced one at a time, so your home is only open to the elements briefly. Extreme cold or precipitation may affect scheduling on certain days.

Can a roof be replaced in cold weather?

Roof replacement is possible in cooler weather, but shingles seal best in moderate temperatures. That’s why fall is an ideal time to replace a roof before the coldest months arrive.

How do I prevent ice dams?

Keep gutters clean, ensure proper attic insulation and ventilation, and address any roof damage before winter. These steps together are the most effective way to prevent ice dams.

Is financing available for exterior projects?

Yes! Empire Siding and Windows offers 12-month special financing with approved credit through Wells Fargo.
